Flying Kings and Pigs

King Bladud

On a quick look around for more on King Bladud, an interesting myth arises. It seems one story about Bladud is that he came to a sticky end after constructing wings for himself and trying to fly to the temple of Apollo in London. Poor man apparently crashed into the walls and died. I wonder if this has anything to do with the origin of the 'Pigs can/might fly' saying?

For more info on Bladud you can click on the links below-

One other story is that is the Bladud was King Lear's father.

Pig Story on the BBC

Click on the image above to go to the BBC news story on the Pigs. It was from a month or so ago but is still very much of interest (of course!).

This raises the issue of where to find other pigs that are not on the street. After a quick trawl around, there seem to be a number of porcine creations that may be a little harder to spot. These include-

The Bath Rugby Pig
Princess Primavera by Kaffe Fassett

and the 2 pigs that appear in the video above-

The Jigsaw Pig
Pigasus

and which was the poor pig pulled from the canal?

We must track these pigs down!

On a sadder note, I understand that several pigs have suffered attack by the mean of spirit. There is a youtube video of the rescue of a pig from the canal. I think this might relate to such an event. Why would people deface, damage, or chuck a piece of art in a canal? Surely they must question themselves while being so destructive? Beats me! People are going out of their way to bring interest and fun to the city and it can only be the very small minded that feel they are able to deface or damage works of art.

UPDATE

The pig that was rescued from the canal was the result of an accident, and is the pig that Peter Wells is working on. The pig was being transported on a bicycle trailer along the towpath and must serve as a warning to all towing pigs by waterways. The one upside is that it was not an act of vandalism.

Weekend Of Pigs

My daughter Issy(6) and myself set out to spot as many as possible of the King Bladud's Pigs, this last weekend. After printing the list from the website we set off with a camera and wandered the highways and byways of Bath. Below are the pigs we found and hopefully the notes below each one are correct.

I will try to keep the list updated as new pigs arrive. Given there are so many of them it will take a little while to get everything up to speed and correctly labelled... I'll also take a few pictures again as Issy is not happy with the quality of all the shots.
